ON MY LAST DAY IN KENYA
Last night we stood in a circle and sang an old song. “Bind us together Lord, bind us together with cords that cannot be broken”. As we sang I remembered that I was the one who introduced this song to Kenya at the Social Center in Kisumu more than 35 years ago and they still sing it today. How thankful we are that God has brought us together to be a family and to share in the vision God has given us.
Today was a day for debriefing and for dreaming. People came to the Worldcomp house in a steady stream to discuss how things went.
- How did things go this year?
- What were our challenges?
- How can we be more efficient?
- What can we do better?
- Where shall we go next year?
There is so much we want to do in Kenya. We believe that next year we are going do a camp that is staffed entirely by government doctors and nurses. We believe that the Lord wants us to do this, not just to help the poor, but to give the Kenyan government the gift that the Lord has given us. I think I can say, without pride, that the Lord has given us a unique and effective way to do medical camps that has a very powerful effect on the Kenyan Community. This vision came out of our meeting with Dr. Owino on Thursday. Possible he is a man who can catch the vision and pass it on to the entire nation. Also I have a vision of the President’s wife coming to open that camp.
Since the time we began this work, we have seen that our dreams are way bigger than our pocketbooks or our own ability. I was reminded of a song that was sung when I was a young man. Some might consider it a bit cheesy, but it has always met a lot to me. It’s called “The impossible dream”.
To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbeatable foe
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go
To right the unrightable wrong
To love pure and chaste from afar
To try when your arms are too weary
To reach the unreachable star
This is my quest
To follow that star
No matter how hopeless
No matter how far
To fight for the right
Without question or pause
To be willing to march into Hell
For a heavenly cause
And I know if I’ll only be true
To this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm
When I’m laid to my rest
And the world will be better for this
That one man, scorned and covered with scars
Still strove with his last ounce of courage
To reach the unreachable star
That really says it for me.
I’ll be boarding the plane for home in a few hours. May the Lord give me strength for the long flight ahead. Looking forward now to being home again.
Bless you all
Richard
